Long road north

Pleased to say that Ken and his friend Garry had an uneventful journey north. Uneventful in the sense that they didn’t have a breakdown or puncture, they didn’t run out of fuel, get lost or even have to use their satellite phone. They were even still talking to each other after travelling 4000 km ...

Their great trek took them through the centre of Australia, with temperatures around 40 degrees C. Their 7-day route from Melbourne to Darwin had them overnighting in Mildura, Port Augusta, Coober Pedy, Alice Springs, Tennant Creek and Katherine.

Ken brought his bike north with him. The ingenious roof mounting worked well, although every night they had to unload the bike to store it securely. Ken took along my small garden ladder, which they erected next to the car, to facilitate hoicking the bike up and down. Sadly there’s no photo of this intricate loading maneouvre.
